Bilateral ties between Morocco and Kenya continue to flourish, with both countries reaffirming their commitment to closer cooperation across political, economic, and social spheres. On 21 August in Nairobi, Morocco’s Ambassador to Kenya and South Sudan, Abderrazzak Laassel, met with the Speaker of the Kenyan Senate, Amason Kingi Jeffah, to discuss strengthening parliamentary collaboration. The two officials agreed to establish a Morocco–Kenya parliamentary friendship group, which will foster dialogue between the two legislatures and promote wider bilateral cooperation.
The new entity will provide a platform for sustained engagement between Moroccan and Kenyan parliamentarians. Beyond parliamentary diplomacy, its mission will extend to advancing shared priorities such as trade, education, and development, while also enhancing mutual understanding between the two nations. This latest step builds on earlier engagements in August that highlighted the growing warmth of relations. On 9 August, Morocco’s embassy in Nairobi hosted a ceremony marking the 26th anniversary of Throne Day, attended by Kenya’s Prime Cabinet Secretary, Musalia Mudavadi.
Speaking at the event, Mr Mudavadi commended Morocco’s progress under the leadership of King Mohammed VI, citing achievements in infrastructure and socio-economic development, including the high-speed rail inaugurated in 2018 and the expansion of the Tanger-Med port.
He also reflected on the history of bilateral ties, noting the opening of Morocco’s embassy in Nairobi in 1981 as a milestone, followed by Kenya’s recent establishment of its embassy in Rabat in December 2023. “Our partnership covers areas such as trade, education, technology, and renewable energy,” he remarked, underlining the breadth of cooperation between the two countries. Kenya’s backing of Morocco’s Autonomy Plan as the sole sustainable framework to resolve the dispute over Western Sahara has further reinforced diplomatic alignment. Against this backdrop, the creation of a parliamentary friendship group signals a deepening of relations, paving the way for more structured collaboration across key sectors of shared interest.
