Liechtenstein’s Prince Alois India Visit Strengthens Trade and Investment Ties

India and Liechtenstein are seeking to expand their economic and diplomatic relationship as Hereditary Prince Alois of Liechtenstein undertakes a state visit to India from 25 to 28 October 2026. The visit, at the invitation of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has brought renewed attention to opportunities in trade, investment, advanced manufacturing, technology and financial services. His Serene Highness Hereditary Prince Alois, who is serving as Liechtenstein’s Acting Head of State, is accompanied by Hereditary Princess Sophie, Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Sabine Monauni, senior officials and a business delegation. The programme reflects both countries’ interest in turning their existing diplomatic relationship into a broader partnership with practical economic benefits.

The visit comes at an important stage in India’s engagement with the European Free Trade Association (EFTA), of which Liechtenstein is a member alongside Switzerland, Norway and Iceland. The India–EFTA Trade and Economic Partnership Agreement (TEPA), which entered into force in October 2025, provides a framework for expanding trade and investment between India and the four European countries. On 27 October, Hereditary Prince Alois received a ceremonial welcome at Rashtrapati Bhavan in New Delhi, where President Droupadi Murmu and Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi welcomed the visiting dignitary. The formal reception underscored the importance India attaches to its relationship with the small European principality, whose internationally connected economy has expertise in specialised manufacturing, innovation and financial services.

Later, Hereditary Prince Alois held bilateral talks with Prime Minister Narendra Modi at Hyderabad House. Their discussions covered ways to strengthen relations across several sectors, including trade, investment, advanced manufacturing, technology, skill development, financial services and start-ups. The leaders also reviewed progress under the India–EFTA trade agreement and explored opportunities for deeper business cooperation. Prime Minister Modi described the discussions as wide-ranging, highlighting the potential to strengthen economic engagement and encourage greater investment between the two countries. The meeting demonstrated a shared interest in building on the momentum created by TEPA and developing partnerships that draw on the complementary strengths of both economies.

The agreement is particularly significant because EFTA has committed to facilitating investments of US$100 billion in India over 15 years, alongside the creation of one million direct jobs over the same period. These commitments provide a broader framework for economic cooperation, although their implementation will depend on investment decisions and projects developed over time. Economic cooperation also featured in a separate meeting on 27 October between India’s Minister of State for Commerce and Industry, Shri Jitin Prasada, and Liechtenstein’s Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs, Environment and Culture, Her Excellency Sabine Monauni. The two sides discussed expanding bilateral trade and investment, with particular attention to technology, innovation, financial services and manufacturing.

A high-level business delegation participated in the discussions, including representatives of the Liechtenstein Chamber of Industry and Commerce, LGT India, Hilti, Savannah Seeds, Liechtenstein Languages, Open Cosmos and Lightrock. Their participation highlighted the importance of direct engagement between businesses in identifying commercial opportunities and developing partnerships. For India, closer ties with Liechtenstein offer an opportunity to attract investment, access specialised industrial expertise and encourage collaboration in areas where technology and manufacturing are increasingly interconnected. For Liechtenstein-based companies, India’s large market, skilled workforce and expanding industrial capabilities present potential avenues for business growth.

President Droupadi Murmu also received Hereditary Prince Alois and Hereditary Princess Sophie at Rashtrapati Bhavan on 27 October and hosted a banquet in their honour. During the engagement, the President highlighted the importance of cooperation in trade, investment, science, technology, innovation, culture and people-to-people exchanges. Her Excellency the President expressed confidence that combining Liechtenstein’s strengths in advanced manufacturing, innovation and financial services with India’s manufacturing capacity, skilled workforce and growing market could create a mutually beneficial partnership. She also highlighted potential collaboration in areas including financial technology, agricultural research, sustainable infrastructure, healthcare and materials science. Skill development and vocational training, particularly through cooperation between businesses and educational institutions, were also identified as areas with scope for further progress.

The diplomatic relationship between India and Liechtenstein dates back to 1993. Although Liechtenstein is a small European country, its specialised industrial base and international economic connections give it a distinctive role in India’s engagement with EFTA. Hereditary Prince Alois has visited India previously, including in 2010 and 2018, and returned to New Delhi in February 2026 to participate in the AI Impact Summit. The October visit therefore represents more than a ceremonial diplomatic engagement. It provides an opportunity to build on existing political contacts, encourage commercial relationships and identify areas in which cooperation can deliver lasting economic value. The India–EFTA agreement offers an established framework, while meetings involving political leaders and business representatives can help translate its wider ambitions into practical partnerships. As Prince Alois’s state visit concludes on 28 October, the focus will remain on sustaining the momentum generated by the discussions. While the longer-term results will depend on investment decisions, business cooperation and the implementation of agreed priorities, the visit has reinforced the shared interest of India and Liechtenstein in a closer and more diversified relationship.
