The G7 Foreign Ministers’ Meeting took place in Italy from 25 to 26 November in the cities of Fiuggi and Anagni. The G7 Summit is an international forum held annually for the leaders of the G7 member states, namely the United States of America, the United Kingdom, Italy, France, Japan, Canada, and Germany. The European Union also participates in the Summit and is represented by the President of the European Union and the President of the European Commission.
Italy assumed the Presidency of the G7 for the seventh time in 2024 and has been conducting meetings and events relevant to the grouping throughout the year. This time, the grouping gathered leaders at the foreign ministerial level. The November 2024 Foreign Ministers’ meeting, however, is the second foreign ministerial-level meeting hosted by Italy, the first one being held in Capri from 17 to 19 April 2024.
At the end of the Summit, the G7 Countries also released a Joint Statement that highlighted the agenda. The Summit had Outreach Sessions, consisting of Leaders from Guest Countries from different parts of the world.
Brief of the Joint Statement: G7 Foreign Ministers’ Meeting
The leaders reiterated their commitment to foster respect for international law, including the Charter of the United Nations, protection of human rights and dignity for all individuals and promotion of gender equality. They stated that as the international community is facing a growing number of challenges, including climate change and biodiversity loss, disaster risks, the eradication of hunger and poverty, and emerging and disruptive technologies, it is a moment to foster collective action in the pursuit of common solutions.
Agenda of the Summit:
Steadfast Support for Ukraine – the leaders pledged their full support to Ukraine amidst immense human suffering and destruction in its cities and critical civilian infrastructure.
- Situation in the Middle East – reaffirmed their unequivocal condemnation of the terrorist and extended their steadfast commitment to the full implementation of UNSC resolution 2735 (2024) and to the comprehensive agreement advanced by President Joe Biden in May.
- Indo-Pacific and the Region– committed to upholding a free and open Indo-Pacific, based on the rule of law, which is inclusive, prosperous and secure, grounded on sovereignty, territorial integrity, and peaceful resolution of disputes, fundamental freedoms and human rights. They also reaffirmed their enduring support for ASEAN centrality and the ASEAN Outlook on the Indo-Pacific.
- Partnership with African Countries – reiterated their commitment to support the African nations in the pursuit of peace, stability and sustainable development, jobs and growth. The leaders also stated to continue building equitable and sustainable partnerships with Africa based on result-based initiatives, aligned with the African Union Agenda 2063 and the integrated African continental thematic plans, in order to jointly tackle global challenges. And also support the African Union in the pursuit of peace and stability.
- Migration– In accordance with the Apulia G7 Leaders’ Communiqué, the leaders affirmed their collective commitment to enhance cooperation and address the drivers of irregular migration and forced displacement, such as global poverty, instability, and climate change and seize the opportunities that migration brings globally.
- Region Issues– discussed the ongoing human rights violations in some countries.
