The resolution is named ‘Global solidarity to fight the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19)’

The United Nations General Assembly unanimously adopted the first resolution on the coronavirus pandemic co-sponsored by India and 187 other nations on April 2. The Assembly called for global cooperation and unity to fight the outbreak which has claimed almost 60,000 lives worldwide. The resolution titled ‘Global solidarity to fight the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19)’ has called for international cooperation in collective mitigation, containment and defeating the pandemic by sharing scientific knowledge, information and practices, and by applying the guidelines laid out by the World Health Organisation to fight the pandemic. This is the first resolution to be adopted by the international organisation on the pandemic which first broke out in China in December 2019.

The resolution also recognised the “unprecedented effects of the pandemic, including the severe disruption to societies and economies, as well as to global travel and commerce, and the devastating impact on the livelihood of people.” It also emphasised on the respect of human rights and that there is no place for discrimination, racism or xenophobia while responding to the pandemic. The resolution was sponsored by Indonesia, Norway, Singapore, Switzerland, Ghana and Liechtenstein and was passed in the silent meetings. The UN General Assembly meetings scheduled for the month of April and May have been postponed due to the virus outbreak.
