President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan of the United Arab Emirates held talks on 22nd December, 2025, with French President Emmanuel Macron, focusing on strengthening bilateral relations and discussing regional and international developments of shared concern.
The two leaders reviewed the long-standing strategic partnership between the UAE and France and explored ways to expand cooperation across a range of sectors. These included the economy and investment, culture, renewable energy, advanced technology, artificial intelligence and sustainability. The discussions reflected the depth of ties between Abu Dhabi and Paris, which have developed steadily over recent decades. France and the UAE maintain close defence relations, with the Gulf state among the principal buyers of French military equipment, including advanced fighter jets. Media reports suggest that France is considering broadening cooperation with the UAE on its future combat aircraft programme, at a time when the participation of some European partners remains uncertain.
During his visit, President Macron also met French troops stationed in the UAE, underlining the country’s role as a key partner for France’s military presence in the region. French media reported that he announced final approval for the replacement of France’s flagship nuclear-powered aircraft carrier, the Charles de Gaulle, as part of a long-term defence modernisation effort. Macron is on a working visit to the UAE, coinciding with the end-of-year period, during which he traditionally meets French forces deployed overseas. The trip also provided an opportunity for in-depth talks with Emirati leaders on bilateral cooperation and broader regional stability.
In a message posted on social media, the French president said his discussions with Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed had centred on further reinforcing the strategic partnership between the two countries, with particular emphasis on supporting stability in the Middle East. The visit comes amid continued diplomatic engagement between the UAE and France, as both countries seek to align their approaches on security, economic development and global challenges, including climate change and technological innovation.
