US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo is on an official visit to India. He will meet External Affairs Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar on Wednesday to discuss key bilateral issues between US and India

This is the first visit by an American Government official after the formation of the new Government in India. US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo is on a maiden official visit. He is slated to meet the newly appointed Union External Affairs Minister of India, Mr. Subrahmanyam Jaishankar and Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

This surprise meeting comes days before Prime Minister Narendra Modi is projected to meet US President Donald Trump at the G-20 summit in Osaka from June 28-29.

Mike Pompeo and Subrahmanyam Jaishankar are expected to discuss a range of issues, mostly around recent trade standoff between the two countries. USA has withdrawn certain import preferences from India. India has also levied certain import tariffs on 28 US products including almonds, apples and walnuts.

According to official reports, the meeting between the two external ministers will be coordinated to amicably discuss the levitation of tariffs and security concerns rather than immediately solve the lingering deals.

Data-localisation and enhancing e-commerce will also be proposed by Mike Pompeo to his Indian counterpart.

Mike Pompeo had famously said, ‘Modi hai to mumkin hai’ in an official interaction with media in June.
