The UAE Cabinet has approved a new provision for family sponsorship. Expats can now sponsor family members based on their incomes
According to a recent announcement of the UAE Cabinet, expats residing in the region will now experience more liberal family sponsorship policies. The Cabinet has approved a new provision to hold income and not profession as the deciding factor for the family sponsorship.
The earlier provision required foreign nationals to be from listed professions in order to sponsor their immediate relatives – spouses and children. A male expat had to have a monthly income of DH 3000-4000, must work in a listed professional field, and company accommodation to sponsor his wife and kids.
Female residents, on the other hand, were only allowed to sponsor immediate family if earned a minimum monthly salary of DH 10,000. Additionally, women had to be teachers, engineers or medical professionals to sponsor family.
The new amendment to the provision has omitted the ‘specific profession’ requirement. This will allow foreign nationals working in any sector to sponsor their immediate family members.
An official statement read, “The decision aims at enhancing family stability of foreign workers and social cohesion, as well as attracting highly skilled workers while maintaining a healthy balance between professional and personal life.”
Information about the change in minimum monthly income requirement has not been outlined.
Non-resident Indians, who comprise 30% of the UAE population, are likely to benefit a great deal from the new provision.
