Lok Sabha Speaker Sumitra Mahajan to not contest 2019 General Elections

Incumbent Speaker of the Lok Sabha and 8-time BJP MP from Indore, Sumitra Mahajan says she will not be contesting in the upcoming General Elections  

On Friday, Lok Sabha Speaker Sumitra Mahajan officially backed down from the upcoming polls. The senior member of the Bharatiya Janata Party is also an eight-time MP from Indore.

In her official statement, the veteran said, “There were speculations and so I decided to end them and free the party to make its choice. I will not contest Lok Sabha Elections.”

The decision has come amid speculations about the BJP pitching candidates above the 75 year age limit. Mahajan turn 76 this month.

The party has been considering Indore Mayor Malini Gaud and BJP General Secretary Kailash Vijayvargiya for the constituency.

Indore goes to polls in the last phase of the elections on May 19, 2019.

Ahead of the polls, the ruling party has refrained for re-nominating many veteran leaders, including L.K. Advani and Murli Manohar Joshi.
