On the 6th anniversary of Delhi’s gang rape case or as it is widely known, the ‘Nirbhaya’ case, Delhi’s Chief Minister pledged stricter security and action.

The gang rape case that shook up the capital city of Delhi took place on December 16, 2012. A 23-year old paramedical student was brutally raped by 6 men in a moving bus, while her male friend was beaten unconscious. The two were then thrown out of the bus and left to die on the streets in South Delhi.

On Sunday, Delhi’s chief Minister, Arvind Kejriwal tweeted “Only way to keep the brave Nirbhaya alive in our minds is to ensure a strong struggle for women safety despite all  hurdles in our way”.

West Bengal Chief Minister, Mamata Banerjee tweeted, “Today is the sixth anniversary of the horrific Delhi Nirbhaya case. The incident shook the country. As a society, we must make this country a better place for women. Say no to violence against women,”

This year saw the brutal gangrape and murder of an eight-year old girl in Kathua district, Kashmir. It also marked the indigenisation of the #Metoo Movement, exposing the level of women’s security in India.
