Peace Talks between the US, Taliban Envoy

A fresh round of talks between the U.S. and the Taliban began in Qatar early Saturday morning.

The talks are said to focus on, American withdrawal from Afghanistan with Taliban promising no further hosting of terrorist outfits and terrorists in the country.

This optimistic approach shall end America’s longest military engagement on foreign soil, which has dragged to 18 years in Afghanistan.

These talks come just days after, U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said that Washington hopes for an Afghan peace agreement before Sept. 1.

Afghan President Ashraf Ghani in his recent visit to Pakistan asked for Islamabad’s help in getting the Taliban to talk peace with Kabul.

Taliban has always refused to talk with the Afghan authorities terming them as US puppets.

Ghani’s visit to Islamabad is a day later after U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo visited the Afghan capital with a vision to solve the Afghan problem.

Pakistan has been the facilitator of the ongoing peace talks between Washington and the Taliban.

On Friday Suhail Shaheen, spokesman for the Taliban’s political office in Doha announced that ,the  talks with U.S. peace envoy Zalmay Khalilzad shall begin early Saturday morning.

Zamay Khalilzad has earlier held six rounds of talks with the Taliban in Doha.

The New York Times stated that a rare copy of a draft of Taliban constitution had been obtained by the newspaper.

They further stated that the Taliban’s close aides had confirmed the document and there was both sophistication and contradiction to the policies regarding women’s education, justice, and tolerance of minorities.
