The Kerala assembly passed a resolution demanding the scrapping of the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA). Pinarayi Vijayan moved the resolution in the state assembly.

The resolution to withdraw CAA moved by Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan in Kerala State Assembly was passed on Tuesday. Vijayan said, “The Act contradicts the basic values and principles of the Constitution. In view of the anxiety among the people of the country, the Centre should take steps to drop the CAA and uphold the secular outlook of the Constitution”.

Even as Vijayan was presenting the resolution, he stated that the CAA is against the “secular” outlook and fabric of the nation, and while granting citizenship, it would bring about religion-based discrimination. Vijayan went on to say that the Citizenship Amendment Act  “dented India’s image in front of the international community.”

The former union minister O Rajagopala, a BJP MLA, was the only opposing voice calling it ‘illegal,’ as both the Houses of the Parliament had already passed the Citizenship Amendment Act. The resolution was passed in a special one-day session, which though initially was called for ratifying the extension of reservation for ST and SC in the Assembly and the Parliament for the next ten years, also brought to the fore the resolution on CAA, keeping in mind the public sentiments on the issue.
