Over 1800 mementoes received by Indian Prime Minister, Narendra Modi were auctioned in a fortnight-long event that began last month. According to a PMO statement, released on Sunday, the funds collected will be used for the Central government’s project to clean the Indian river of Ganges

Indian Prime Minister, Narendra Modi gave over 1800 gifts received by him for auctioning at a fortnight-long event held at the National Gallery of Modern Art. According to a PMO statement, released on Sunday, the proceedings of the auction will be used to fund the central government’s Namami Gange project, aimed at cleaning the Ganga.

The PMO statement revealed that even as the Chief Minister of Gujarat, PM Narendra Modi would auction mementoes to raise funds for girl child education. It added, “Continuing the same practice, he has now enabled the collection of funds which will help clean up the river Ganga”. The exact amount collected through the auction has not been disclosed.

Some of the valuable sell-offs included a statuette of Lord Shiva, originally priced at Rs 5000, sold for Rs 10, 00,000. According to the PMO statement, a wooden replica of the Ashoka Pillar and a Buddha statuette, both with the base price of Rs 4000, were, respectively, sold for Rs 13,00,000 and Rs 7,00,000.  A Haroi, Assam’s traditional offering tray with a stand, originally priced at Rs 2000, received a high bid of Rs 12,00,000.
