PM Narendra Modi met British PM Boris Johnson at the G7 summit in Biarritz, France. This is the first meeting between the two leaders since Johnson became PM last month.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi met his British counterpart Boris Johnson at the G7 summit on Sunday and the two leaders discussed ways to bolster bilateral co-operation in varied areas like trade, investment, defence and education.

PM Modi met the British PM on the sidelines of the G7 summit. The Prime Minister arrived in Biarritz after completing his first prime ministerial visit to Bahrain.

“PM Modi begins by congratulating PM Johnson on England’s spectacular win in the Third Test of the Ashes a short while ago,” the Prime Minister’s Office said on Twitter.

“PM @narendramodi had a good meeting with UK PM @BorisJohnson on margins of #G7 summit. Discussions focused on strengthening our bilateral ties going forward, inter alia, in trade & investment, defence & security, S & T and education sectors,” Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson Raveesh Kumar tweeted.

Sunday’s meeting was the first between the two leaders since Johnson became Prime Minister last month. The meeting occurred just after India abrogated Article 370 of the Constitution and withdrew Jammu and Kashmir’s special status. The state has been bifurcated into two Union territories.

Earlier this week, the UK PM told PM Modi during a telephonic conversation that Kashmir is a bilateral matter between India and Pakistan. “The Prime Minister made clear that the UK views the issue of Kashmir as one for India and Pakistan to resolve bilaterally. He underlined the importance of resolving issues through dialogue,” a Downing Street spokesperson averred.

India has repeatedly told the international community that repealing Article 370 is an internal matter and Pakistan should accept the reality.
