India takes a huge sigh of relief as the European Union Parliament puts off the voting scheduled on the anti-CAA resolutions to March.

The voting of the MEPs on the resolutions against India’s new citizenship bill was scheduled to take place on Thursday. The Parliament carried on with the debate and discussions on the resolutions against India’s CAA which was formally presented by the five major political parties of the EU.

Of the 483 Members of the European Parliament in the House, 271 members voted to defer the voting to a later date while 199 votes were not in favour of the proposal to postpone it.

India holds the Pakistani-born British MP Shafaq Mohammed accountable for stirring up anti-India resolutions on Kashmir and CAA in his last attempt before the Brexit. After January 31, the British representatives will cease to become the official part of the Parliament in Brussels as Britain takes leave from the EU.

India has hailed the EU Parliament’s decision to postpone the voting as a significant “diplomatic victory”. With the extended timeline, India can work through diplomatic channels to bring in the cooperation of the other MEPs on the matter.

India has maintained the stance that the new citizenship bill is its “internal matter” which has passed through democratic channels by both the Houses of Parliament. Prime Minister Narendra Modi will be visiting Brussels to attend the India-EU Summit in March.
