Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal announces free travel for women

Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal announced free travel for women in the metro and buses on Monday. The move is yet to be approved by the Centre

Chief Minister of Delhi, Arvind Kejriwal announced free metro and bus travel for women on Monday. A proposal for the same will be presented in the cabinet next week.

In his announcement, the CM affirmed, “Right now our concern is the safety of women.”

He said, “There are questions regarding the metro, but we will let you know how the proposal evolves at every step.”

The CM confirmed that the state government will bear the cost of the free travel. The initiative will cost the Delhi government 700 crore in 2019.

Speaking of women who can afford these modes of transport, he said, “Those who can afford it, can buy tickets and forgo subsidy so others could benefit.”

CM Kejriwal further asserted, “Delhi is the only government that is honest and is spending your money on facilities and is still running on profit.”

The decision has come soon after the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) was defeated across all seven Delhi Lok Sabha seats in the 2019 polls.

Mocking the CM’s plans, Delhi BJP Chief Manoj Tiwari said, “Now such announcements will keep coming from the ghoshna mantri [announcement minister].”

Tiwari added, “Arvind Kejriwal has lost his mental balance.”

Delhi has partial statehood and the Delhi metro is partly owned by the Centre. If approved by the Union government, the move is expected to be implemented within three months.
