British Prime Minister Boris Johnson was shifted to the intensive care unit(ICU) on April 6, a day after he was admitted to the hospital for further testing for the virus. According to Downing Street, his condition worsened and on the advice of the National Health Services (NHS) and his medical team, he was shifted to the ICU. According to BBC correspondent Chris Mason, Mr Johnson was given an oxygen treatment before being taken to the ICU. However, he has not been put on a ventilator. A spokesperson confirmed that Foreign Secretary Dominic Raab would be deputising for the Prime Minister “where necessary”.
Mr Johnson was admitted to the hospital on the evening of April 5 after showing persistent symptoms of the virus which has claimed close to 75,000 lives worldwide. As of April 7, the number of confirmed cases in Britain is 51,608 with 5,373 deaths.
