Two back-to-back mass shootings rattled the US, killing as many as 29 people.

The two mass shootings, first in El Paso, Texas, that killed 20 people, including seven Mexican nationals, was followed by another shooting rampage in Dayton, Ohio. At least 9 people were killed and 27 others were wounded after a 24-year-old man, identified as Connor Betts, opened fire in a busy entertainment district in Dayton on Saturday evening.

Police shot the gunman within 30 seconds of opening fire. The gunman’s sister was one of the 9 people killed in the gruesome attack. Police said that Betts used an “assault-style rifle” in the attack and a shotgun has been retrieved from his car. They are also trying to ascertain whether the gunman had initially sought to kill his sister.

This comes at a time when the country was still recovering from the shooting at a Walmart store in El Paso, Texas. The accused, Patrick Crusius, has been apprehended by the authorities and is being held in custody.

The twin attacks have led to massive outrage against the Donald Trump administration over racism and the failure of gun control in the country. Trump responded to the incident and said, “This has been going on for years, for years and years in our country and we have to get it stopped.” Trump did not talk about the problem of gun control, but added, “Hate has no place in our country. We’re going to take care of it.”

He further blamed the shootings on mental illness and asserted that the gunmen were “very, very seriously mentally ill’. Meanwhile, investigators have not remarked on the mental state of the two gunmen. Dayton’s police chief, Richard S. Biehl, said that there has been no indication of any link between the two incidents. The authorities stated that they are still trying to establish the motive behind the two shootings.
