Stella Nyanzai, the activist who stoked controversy in Uganda for a Facebook post on the dead mother of President Yoweri Museveni, has refused to accept bail, choosing to stay on remand until her case was heard. The reason that she cited for refusing bail was teaching prison inmates how to use Facebook. She said, “What are they investigating –
that Yoweri Museveni is still offended? I will go and be with those ladies in Luzira [Prison] teaching them how to write on Facebook.” “When they are released they can write as much as I do. As a writer… A poetess… writing to a broad group of people, I write criticising the regime.” This isn’t the first time that the activist has found herself mired in controversy. Last year, Nyanzai was charged with offences related to cyber harassment, which led to her arrest. The case was consequently dropped.
The hearing for the ongoing case against her is due on November 22.
