An earthquake of 7.0. magnitude struck Southern Philippines 120 miles southeast of the city of Davao on Saturday morning. Pacific regions closer to the earthquake have been warned about a potential tsunami

Southern Philippines was hit by 7.0. magnitude earthquake during the morning hours on Saturday. The earthquake broke out 120 miles southeast from the city of Davao, Philippines. Parts of the Pacific closer to the quake have been warned by the United States Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre of a potential tsunami.

Indonesia, which has not yet recovered from last Saturday’s tsunami, may be exposed to another disaster as tsunami warnings for Pacific regions are released. Post the Philippines earthquake, US Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre had cautioned Indonesia, Philippines and Palau.

Citizens in Philippines were asked to avoid the coast earlier on Saturday by the Philippines Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) amid predictions of “minor sea level disturbances”. The advisory issued was later withdrawn as the PHIVOLCS clarified, “The last recorded wave occurred at 01:10 p.m. (PST) for this station. Records show that wave heights have returned to the normal tide level” further adding, “With this, any effects due to minor sea level disturbances have largely passed and therefore DOST-PHIVOLCS has now cancelled recommendations prescribed in our Tsunami Advisory issued for this event”.

The United States Geological Survey had initially recorded the earthquake at a magnitude of 7.2, later revised to 6.9, and finally marked at 7.0.
