This weekend witnessed a landmark win for anti-corruption activist and political newcomer, Zuzana Caputova, who has now been elected as the fifth President of Slovakia.

Caputova will become the first female President of the European nation. The young environmental lawyer defeated opponent Maros Sefcovic by 58.40 per cent votes.

The Presidential Election results have come in the wake of Slovak journalist Jan Kuciak and his fiancé’s murder in February. The journalist was investigating politicians’ link to organised crime in the country at the time.

Caputova is known for supporting and adovcating a thorough investigation of the matter.

Apart from being a strong voice against corruption in Slovakia, Caputova is a 45-year-old divorcee and mother of two. She will assume office in June 2019, succeeding incumbent President Andrej Kiska.
