Indian National Congress President, Rahul Gandhi promised the establishment of the Minimum Income Support Scheme on Monday. The programme promises Rs 72,000 per annum to 25 crore economically backward citizens if the party comes to power in 2019.

The Congress President first promised the implementation of the scheme during the Chattisgarh polls, last year.

Speaking with the press today, Rahul Gandhi said, “It is an extremely powerful, ground-breaking and well-thought through idea.” He affirmed that the Congress had consulted several economists on the scheme.

According to the Congress leader, “5 crore families and 25 crore people will directly benefit from this scheme. All calculations have been done. There is no such scheme anywhere else in the world.” He further promised, “We will wipe out poverty from the country.”

Ahead of the 2019 polls, the opposition is also considering a possible alliance with AAP in Delhi. Congress’ Delhi President Sheila Dixit, Rahul Gandhi, and other unit leaders deliberated the potential coalition on Monday.
