Chinese President Xi Jinping will meet PM Narendra Modi from October 11-12 in Chennai for the second informal summit. The inaugural informal summit took place in Wuhan, China from April 27-28, 2018.

Chinese President Xi Jinping and Prime Minister Narendra Modi will meet from October 11-12 for the second informal summit. Another key point is that the summit will take place in the coastal town of Mamallapuram, situated near Chennai.

The External Affairs Ministry said that the summit will provide an opportunity to discuss bilateral, regional and global issues. Significantly, the two leaders will also discuss the India-China Closer Development Partnership.

Ahead of the visit, the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) temporarily shut down monuments to tourists in Mamallapuram. Therefore, the public will not be allowed to visit popular tourist locations from Tuesday.

This is the second informal summit between the two leaders. When the first summit took place in Wuhan, China from April 27-28, 2018, relations between the two countries were strained. To emphasise, the relations between the two countries became normal after a 73-day standoff at Doklam in 2017.

Chinese military’s decision to build a road near the Siliguri corridor had led to the standoff. The standoff ended after China withdrew the plan.

Above all, the announcement of the second summit coincides with the ongoing visit of Pakistan PM Imran Khan and Army Chief Gen Qamar Javed Bajwa. Meanwhile, China refused to mediate on the Kashmir issue and said that the issue should be resolved bilaterally by India and Pakistan.
