Prem Singh Tamang, popularly known as P.S. Golay, was sworn in as the Chief Minister of Sikkim on Monday. He is the leader of the Sikkim Krantikari Morcha (SKM)

Chamling was India’s longest serving Chief Minister until his resignation on Friday. He governed the hill state of Sikkim for 24 years, securing five consecutive terms.

According to the result of the Sikkim Vidhan Sabha polls, Golay’s Sikkim Krantikari Morcha (SKM) will now replace the Sikkim Democratic Front (SDF) in the state.

Securing 17 of the 32 seats in the State Legislative Assembly, SKM defeated SDF by a slim margin of two seats. Active in Sikkim since 1990, P.S. Golay had started his political career with the SDF.

He maintained a winning streak in West Sikkim as a SDF candidate till 2004. In 2009, P.S. Golay announced that he was a dissent MLA of the party.

He highlighted the Sikkim Democratic Front’s “failure to deliver on promises, alleged corruption and nepotism.”

P.S. Golay officially resigned from the SDF in 2013 and established the Sikkim Krantikari Morcha. The newly founded party contested two seats in 2014.

The 2019 SKM manifesto, which led the party to victory, included government jobs for the unemployed. It also comprised loan waivers up to five lakhs for farmers.

The SKM manifesto also ensured vehement action to stop the enforcement of the controversial Citizen Amendment Bill.
