A terrorist attack, claimed by militant group al-Shabaab, broke out in a compound in the Westlands district of Nairobi, Kenya, on Tuesday. By Wednesday, Kenyan President, Uhuru Kenyatta assured citizens that the security forces had put an end to the attack, killing all gunmen

An attack carried out by gunmen was unleashed on a Westlands district compound, comprising Hotel DusitD2 and offices, on Tuesday in the capital city of Nairobi, Kenya. The attack was claimed by a Somalia-based militant group al-Shabaab. According to the official record fourteen civilians present at the hotel and office complex lost their lives during the incursion. Explosions were last heard early on Wednesday morning. Later in the day, Kenyan President Uhuru Kenyatta announced that the attack was over and the situation was under control as the country’s security forces had managed to kill all four armed militants.

According to the Kenyan President, the security forces managed to evacuate over seven hundred civilians from the complex in Westlands. President Uhuru Kenyatta also vowed to relentlessly pursue “those involved in the funding, planning and execution of a heinous act wherever they will be”. He asserted that Kenya was now on “highest alert”. However, the President assured “every Kenyan and foreign visitors that you are safe in Kenya”.

The Somalia-based Islamist militant organisation, al-Shabaab carried out a similar attack over five years ago in a popular Kenyan mall in the capital city, which led to over sixty civilian deaths. According to security camera footage, Tuesday’s attack was carried out by four men dressed in black combat outfits, armed with AK47s. The claiming statement by al-Shabaab asserted, “Al-Shabaab mujahideen snipers are in operation in Nairobi, the capital of Kenya. Our reports confirm that mujahideen fighters stormed the target building.”

In the hours that followed the blasts in the public complex, Kenyan security forces launched counter attacks and engaged in firefights with the attackers. One of the civilians that witnessed and survived the attack said, “I couldn’t believe I was alive. The blast was so loud and shook the whole complex.”
