Iran’s Ambassador to India Ali Chegeni expressed hope that India will act according to its national interest and Iran will protect India’s energy security

Ali Chegeni, Iran’s Ambassador to India, expressed hope that India will act according to its national interest and promised that Iran would act as a “protector” of India’s energy security concerns even as the country is “under pressure” to not buy oil from Iran.

Mr Chegeni also asserted that we are ready to provide India with “affordability, accessibility and security” in regard to energy.

He hailed India’s “assertiveness” in the international matters and pitched for a renewed bilateral cooperation, leaving behind the misconceptions and distrust.

“We think India is under pressure, but we believe India is a friend. India’s relations with other countries do not affect us. Our relations with India are based on history; it is based on long-term mutual benefit and interest”, he said.

Mr Chegeni, who was attending a cultural event in New Delhi, said that though oil import from Iran might have stopped, we did not receive any “negative signal” from India.

India and Iran have completed 60 years of bilateral relations in 2019.
