Maldivian President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih met with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi during his three-day state visit to India. This is the President’s first foreign visit after assuming office last month.

During his three-day state visit to India, Maldivian President  Ibrahim Mohamed Solih met with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday. The two leaders discussed bilateral initiatives in multiple areas to strengthen cooperation between the two nations.

President Solih reached India on Sunday, marking his first foreign visit after assuming office in November. Indian PM Modi had attended the President’s swearing-in ceremony last month where the two leaders laid down the foundation for a strong bilateral relationship between India and Maldives.

The two nations have previously shared a perturbed relationship under Abdulla Yameen’s Presidential term. The Indian PM and the now Maldivian President, however, have managed to create an equation built on mutual respect and understanding.

Ministry of External Affairs Spokesperson, Raveesh Kumar tweeted, “PM @narendramodi warmly received President @ibusolih ahead of delegation level talks. During his visit to Maldives for the President’s inauguration in November, PM had extended an invitation to President Solih to make a State Visit to India.” The meeting between the two leaders is being viewed as the start of a solid new partnership.

Prior to this, the Maldivian President was called on by Indian External Affairs Minister, Sushma Swaraj. According to the Indian MEA spokesperson the two leaders covered a wide range of matters concerning both bilateral and regional cooperation.
