Indian Army claimed to have spotted ‘Yeti’, a furry ape-like mythical creature, which found its existence only in the Nepali folklore but has never been proven.

The Indian Army claimed on Tuesday to have sighted mysterious footprints of ‘Yeti’ close to Makalu Base camp. The Mountaineering Expedition team came across the mythical Himalayan beast while they were heading towards the peak, army tweeted.

The footprints of the mythical creature measured 32×15 inches, which the army had found on April 9. “This elusive snowman has only been sighted at Makalu-Barun National Park in the past,” Indian Army tweeted. The camp is an isolated mountainous area between Nepal and Tibet.

The tweet stimulated a flurry of sceptical responses on social media. While many rebuked the army for circulating theories debunked by science earlier, some made fun of the tweet.

In response to the Indian Army’s tweet, a self-proclaimed scientist asked them to be cautious in their findings. He added that there was a lot of research done on Yeti in the past. However, none had proved the creature’s existence.

The Indian military said that it has submitted the “evidence” of the Abominable Snowman for scientific evaluation. “So, we thought it prudent (to go public) to excite scientific temper and rekindle the interest,” army said. Based on previous theories that the footprints matched, the photographs have been handed over to subject matter experts.

Yeti is a furry ape-like creature taller than an average human, which inhabits the Himalayas and other regions. It found its existence only in the Nepali folklore, but has never been proven.

However, in the 1950s, a British explorer Eric Shipton sighted a series of abnormal footprints while climbing Mount Everest. The government of Nepal had also issued a hunting license for Yeti, in a hope to capture the creature.
