India-Iran Sign 9 MoUs to Boost Bilateral Ties

New Delhi: Dr. Hassan Rouhani, President of the Islamic Republic of Iran, paid his first State Visit to India at the invitation of Prime Minister of the Republic of India, Shri Narendra Modi, from 15-17 February 2018.

The President was accompanied by a high-level delegation comprising Cabinet Ministers, senior officials and business leaders. He was accorded a friendly and cordial ceremonial welcome in the forecourt of Rashtrapati Bhawan on 17 February. President, Shri Ram Nath Kovind hosted an official banquet dinner in honour of the visiting dignitary. Delegation level discussions were held between Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi and President Dr Hassan Rouhani.

India and Iran sign several MoUs and agreements to boost bilateral ties, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President Rouhani pledge to further strengthen bilateral relations.

The pacts were signed after delegation level talks between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and visiting Iran President Hassan Rouhani at New Delhi’s Hyderabad house.

The two countries inked pacts to enhance cooperation in the areas of taxation, maritime cooperation, health and medicine, trade, agriculture and postal cooperation.

The documents that were signed include – agreement for the avoidance of double taxation and prevention of Fiscal Evasion with respect to taxes on Income, exemption from Visa requirement for holders of Diplomatic Passports, Lease Contract for Shahid Beheshti Port- Phase 1 of Chabahar for 18 months, MoU on Cooperation in the field of Traditional Systems of Medicine, MoU on the establishment of an Expert Group on Trade Remedy Measures to promote cooperation in areas of mutual interest, MoU on Cooperation in the field of Agriculture and Allied Sectors, MoU on Cooperation in the field of Health and Medicine and MoU on Postal Cooperation.

Prime Minister Modi said India and Iran believe in peace and cooperation. He said that Iran President’s visit will help in boosting strategic ties between the two nations.

The Prime Minister also thanked the Iranian President for developing Chabahar Port.

Earlier in the day, Iran President Hassan Rouhani was today accorded a Ceremonial Reception at the Rashtrapati Bhawan. Speaking to the media, Iranian President recalled the age old cultural ties between the two countries.

The Iranian President, later, visited the samadhi of Mahatma Gandhi and paid tribute to the father of the nation.
