India PM Narendra Modi participates in ASEAN-India Breakfast Summit

India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi participated in the ASEAN-India Breakfast Summit held in Singapore today. In his address, he stressed on the importance of maritime cooperation and centrality of trade and investment essential to the advancement of the strategic Indo-Pacific region.

The Breakfast Summit was preceded by a discussion between India’s Prime Minister and US Vice President Mike Pence on Wednesday. The subject of Indo-Pacific region came up during their discussions. While Modi spoke India’s vision of the region, which he had shared in his speech in Singapore at IISS Shangrila Dialogue in June, Pence spoke about an open and free Indo-Pacific region. He also added that the naval exercises organized recently by India, US and Japan were a step towards “ensuring free and open access to the seas all across this region.”

Before he left for Singapore, Prime Minister Modi had said that his visit to Singapore would help contribute to the already growing partnership between with ASEAN as well as East Asia Summit nations.
