Former Indian Cricketer, Woorkeri Venkat Raman was appointed as the new coach for the Indian women’s cricket team on Thursday. The decision was made after BCCI rejected the renewal contract of former coach, Ramesh Powar, following Mithali Raj allegations against him

Former Indian opener, Woorkeri Venkat Raman was appointed as the new Head Coach for the Indian women’s cricket team on Thursday. Prior to this, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) refused to renew former cricket coach, Ramesh Powar’s contract after his clash with senior Indian cricketer Mithali Raj.

Earlier this year, Mithali Raj wrote a letter to BCCI CEO, Rahul Johri revealing how the former Indian women’s team coach discriminated against her during the Women’s T20 World Cup. The ODI Captain had claimed that coach Powar ignored her throughout and asked her not to come to the field during the India vs Australia match.

The new Head Coach for the Indian women’s cricket team is a former Indian cricketer currently operating as a batting Consultant at the National Cricket Academy in Bengaluru. South African cricketer, Gary Kristen, who guided the Indian men’s cricket team in the 2011 World Cup, was also being considered for the post.

The current Indian women’s team coach has scored over 400 runs in 11 international test matches and over 600 runs in 27 international one-day tournaments for India. The cricketer retired in 1999 and has since coached multiple teams during the Indian Premier League (IPL).

WV Raman will now be leading the Indian women’s cricket during the New Zealand tour where the team is scheduled to play 5 ODIs and 3 T20Is in January 2019.
