Priyanka Chaturvedi has left the Indian National Congress to join Shiv Sena ahead of the third phase of the ongoing 2019 Lok Sabha Polls

Congress national spokesperson Priyanka Chaturvedi resigned from the party and joined the Shiv Sena in less than 24 hours. Citing the reason of reinstatement of “lumpen goons” in the Congress, Priyanka tweeted her resignation letter on Friday afternoon.

“Deeply saddened that lumpen goons get preference in @incindia over those who have given their sweat & blood. Having faced brickbats & abuse across board for the party but yet those who threatened me within the party getting away with not even a rap on their knuckles is unfortunate,” reads Priyanka’s tweet.

She was referring to the incident when some party workers had allegedly misbehaved with her during a press conference.  The reports of manhandling her came from Mathura, Uttar Pradesh, in September. A few days ago, the Uttar Pradesh Congress had suspended the workers. However, they were reportedly taken back on Monday with a nod from Jyotiraditya Scindia.

“I gave ten years of my life to a political party. But now I feel extremely let down for not standing up on issues which are important for women’s rights,” said the 39-year-old. She handed her resignation letter to Rahul Gandhi on April 18. In the letter, she stated that her services are not being valued in the organization. “I also feel that more time I spend in the organization will be at the cost of my own self-respect and dignity,” said Priyanka.

She also dismissed the reports of quitting the party because of not being picked as a Lok Sabha election candidate. Priyanka extended her good wishes to the party while addressing a press conference in Mumbai after joining Shiv Sena.
