1 July, every year, is celebrated as the National Day of Canada. Also known as Canada Day, it is a statutory holiday across Canada marked with magnanimous celebrations in the capital city, Ottawa. Celebratory Parades are held across multiple cities in Canada, particularly in the Parliament Hill area of Ottawa
The national day of Canada has a significant history attached to the celebrations. July 1 commemorates the anniversary of Canada as a fully independent nation.
History:
On 1 July, 1867, the British North America Act was passed. Also known as Constitution Act of 1867, it united the three separate British colonies of Canada, Nova Scotia and New Brunswick into a single Dominion within the British Dominion called Canada. Originally it was known as Dominion Day.
It gained political control and governance over its own affairs while still being a British subject. The British parliament and royalty maintained political control over certain areas, such as foreign affairs, defence, and the constitution.
It gradually gained increased independence over the years, notably with the passage of the Statute of Westminster in 1931, until finally becoming completely independent with the passing of the Constitution Act, 1982 which served to fully validate the Canadian constitution.
Celebrations:
Canada Day celebratory events are held across major cities like Vancouver, Ottawa, Calgary, Toronto, Montreal, and Victoria. Outdoor public events are organized; such as parades, carnivals, festivals, barbecues, and air and maritime shows, fireworks, and free musical concerts, as well as citizenship ceremonies.
Royal Canadian Mounted Police have established a group known as the RCMP Musical Ride which gives a theatrical performance on Parliament Hill, Ottawa every year during the National Day celebrations.
The festivities are revered in every nook and corner of the country marking the nation’s official creation and the spirit of Canadian patriotism.
